Other Voices: Elbow

One of the UK’s most acclaimed bands, winning the coveted Mercury prize for The Seldom Seen Kid to headlining concerts around the globe. Superstars in Britain, the group’s popularity around the world continues to grow over 30 years. They toured Cuba 2014, one of the first Western rock bands to do so, and have remained a cult favourite in South America. Millions of people around the globe were introduced to their music in 2012 when their track first steps was chosen to be the official song of the London Olympics and many fans discovered them in 2016 when Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant covered their track “The Blanket of Night” for the best-selling charity The Long Road album.

In 2017 they were selected by the iconic filmmaker Michel Gondry to record the soundtrack for John Lewis’ Christmas advert. They come to Dingle in support of their eighth studio album, Giants of All Sizes, a hyp- notic and meditative release covering topics from Brexit, the Greenfell fire tragedy and the recent death of singer Guy Garvey’s father.

Pitchfork described it as a collection of “rich sweeping rock songs about melancholy and love with a dreamy sense of time passing” and elsewhere NPR named it as one of their albums of the year, noting that while it’s a “dark record full of anger and angst the group can’t help but offer a note of hope”
