About the main character

Knuts Skujenieks (1936-2022), poet, translator, critic, publicist

Latvian poet Janis Rokpelnis has said: There are people who you meet and you know – they are genius.

Knuts Skuejnieks is widely known in Latvia, as well as in Europe. His writings have been translated in many languages. Also poet himself has translated poems to Latvian. Among those are poems by Federico Garcia Lorca, Gabriele Mistral,  Yiannis Ritsos, Tomas Transtromer, Inger Christensen and others, as well as many European folksongs. He has translated from Swedish, Danish, Polish, Spanish and other languages. At one time he was accused of anti-communist propoganda and imprisoned for 7 years in a Gulag in Mordovia. His works have been published in 7 volumes. His poetry is a deep personal experience inspired by his own life and ability to learn the hard lesson of life so that he could give it further in a plain and understendable way.  One of the main tasks a documentary has to do is to record and be aware of a nation’s geniuses and important people while they are still among us. While they can remind us with their memories about essential values – freedom and humanity, that unites all generations and is current at any time.

At the same time Knuts Skujenieks is undeservedly little appreciated and recognized in Latvia.

Knuts Skujenieks has received many significant awards in Latvia and abroad, including:

Jotvingians prize (1993, Lithuania), Prize of Ivan Franko (1994, Ukrain), Swedish poet’s Tomas Transtroemer prize in poetry (1998); Recived also many awards of honor and medals of Latvian State as Order of the Three Stars (1995) and the Cross of Recognition (2008), as well other states awards as from Norway (1998), Spain (1994), Lithuania (2001), Sweden (2001) and Poland (2014).
