One of Us

For more than forty years, Belela Herrera has dedicated her life to saving that of others. The politically persecuted, those displaced by civil wars, refugees are her concern and vocation. Belela was the representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Santiago de Chile, Brazil, Costa Rica and Argentina during the hardest years of the military dictatorships in Latin America. In a continent sunk by coups and paramilitary groups, in a world dominated by the Cold War, Belela makes its way. A petite woman who faces giants. Jailers, dictators and ministers in uniform. She visits prisons and refugee camps, rescues prisoners. Her story is also that of a woman who invented herself and twisted the destiny reserved for girls of her social class: marrying her surname to another from high society, a large family, a comfortable and elegant existence. Indeed, all this had and did Belela before finding her vocation.
